Elyssa Willadsen

Elyssa talks about her residency at the Greene Art Gallery, July 15/16 2014

My time spent at the Greene Gallery will mainly consist of repurposing materials myself and the other HFAgers have collected over time. I find this to be a very exciting part of the process because it is when aesthetics and practicality (or lack there of) get to come together to express the ideas of HFA and the space itself. Whether items can be used in an ecological or aesthetic sense the items become emotionally and purposefully charged to create the “safe space” quality I find so comforting about the habitats. The repurposing of a vast amount of material has really opened my eyes to the potential that everything I touch can be turned into a medium of expression, this concept and feeling I hope resonates to viewers.

Elyssa Willadsen's work consists mainly of sculpture and video installation work that addresses ideas of space, technology, and it’s effects on the physicality of our being. She resides in the beautifully filthy neighborhood of Bed-Stuy Brooklyn. She will finish her Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts at the School of Visual Arts in the Spring of 2015.
